Tasty Tuesdays Grilled Chicken with Coconut Sauce

I dont confine my outdoor cooking to the summer months. Though this dish is delicious in the summer, its also very comforting and tasty during cold winter months.

Coconut was never a flavor I enjoyed when I was a kid--maybe because I associated coconut with sweetened flakes on the top of those hideous pink Hostess snowballs.  Coconut milk, however, is another flavor entirely.  Many of my favorite recipes call for it (see Chicken Curry in a Hurry, Thai-Style Squash Soup, and Curry-Coconut Sauce).

This sauce has the perfect amount of heat--the jalapenos are not overpowering, but do add a spicy zip that is so delicious over chicken (over your rice, too).  You can use fresh jalapenos and grill and peel them, but I no longer do that: I just use two or three canned jalapenos and put them straight in the blender without grilling, then freeze the rest of the can for next time (I put 2-3 peppers in a snack Ziploc, squeeze the air out, then put all the Ziplocs in a freezer bag and date it).

When I made this over the weekend, it just so happened that my boys were at a movie and my daughter was taking a nap--so Allen and I were able to have a quiet and delicious lunch at home together.  I dont know that this has ever happened before.  I hardly knew how to eat without getting up to help kids or fill glasses or wipe up spills or set-the-timer-for-ten-minutes-for-a-certain-child-who-needs-a-deadline-in-order-to-finish-his-food.

Vinyl as Labels

O.k. I promise for now just ONE MORE vinyl creation.

I am in LOVE with labels.

I obsessively label everything. 

So as you can imagine while my sis-in-law was slaving away for me on her Cricut, of course, I had her cut me a gazillion labels.

But my favs are for my baskets.

BEFORE

 I found some DI wallet sized frames awhile ago for my baskets.

I spray painted them Ivory

 Sanded and scuffed them afterwards.

Found some old scrapbook paper and cut out the paper to be framed.

Then rubbed on my new number labels!

And hot glued the frame to my entertainment center baskets.

Chippendale Mirror Plans

MAKING THE CHIPPENDALE MIRROR

Although not a reproduction of any specific eighteenth-

century original, this mirror does evoke a number of Chip-

pendale designs.

Begin construction with the scrollwork background.

After the pieces have been band sawn and sanded, assemble

them with butt joints and hold in place with a pair of

cleats which are glued and screwed across the back of the

scrollwork. At that time, take measurements for the large

moulding which lifts and presents the glass.

CHIPPENDALE

What are the characteristics of Chippendale furniture?

In the strictest sense, the only furniture that can be

identified as Chippendale is that to which Thomas Chip-

pendale, the English carver and designer actually applied

his tools. But there are few such pieces and many that

are commonly (and usefully) referred to as Chippendale.

Another approach reserves the Chippendale name for

those pieces that are exact representations of his pub-

lished drawings. But this, too, is very limiting, particu-

larly when discussing furniture made in North America.

While there are a handful of American-made pieces

which accurately represent specific Chippendale designs,

the overwhelming majority of American-made Chippen-

dale furniture does not—for some very good reasons.

Thomas Chippendale, George Hepplewhite and

Thomas Sheraton—the English designers whose seminal

books inspired much American period furniture—all

designed for a different market than that served by most

American craftsmen of the day. Many of the English

designs were intended for placement in grand English

homes and included, therefore, elaborate ornamentation

that was inappropriate for less palatial American settings

(and perhaps for less effete American sensibilities).

This doesnt mean that discriminating American buy-

ers werent concerned about the appearance of their

furniture. Clearly they were, but what those buyers

wanted was furniture that not only looked good but was

also, and most importantly, useful. They wanted storage,

serving surfaces, beds. In short, they wanted furniture

in which function and form were more fully integrated.

To address this desire on the part of their customers,

American designers/craftsmen reinterpreted the forms

presented in the books of the English designers, restrain-

ing the decorative excesses of the originals, focusing on

the usefulness of their furniture in the homes of their

customers.

This makes stylistic attribution a slippery business.

Even though almost all high-style American furniture

of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries

exhibits characteristics of Chippendale, Hepplewhite

and Sheraton designs, very little actually represents any

specific published drawings. Further complicating the

business of stylistic attribution is the fact that many

pieces exhibit characteristics of more than one style. A

sideboard might have a spade foot (a Hepplewhite signa-

ture) and a gallery of turned spindles (associated with

Sheratons designs). A chair might have a balloon back

and solid splat (Queen Anne) and ball-and-claw feet

(Chippendale).

In the hands of a skilled craftsman, such blending is

unimportant. A well-designed chair is a well-designed

chair whatever the origins of its iconography.

But for the student of furniture, it can be useful to

look at this matter of stylistic attribution—not to fasten

a particular label on a particular piece but in order to

reflect on the American designer/craftsmans handling

of the forms and motifs with which he worked.

Window Seat Update

So I have these beautiful window seats in a few of my rooms.

Not only do the rooms need some paint, white just wont cut it with kiddos, these rooms also need a little updated. 

I think the wood "dates" the house.

So after a bit of research and some prep work, I decided to get this room into shape!

First up, I painted the room. 

A beautiful gray color from Glidden called Pebble Gray.

I am in love with it! Not too blue, not too dark, just fresh and bright!

Next, I removed the cabinet door fronts from the window seat and taped off all the walls and inside of the seat.

 After I had done all the prep work {cleaning the cabinets, taping off the walls, and removing all hardware} I got out all the paint and started.

Gripper is my new favorite thing. I didnt have to sand the cabinets at all. It dries supper fast and adheres easily without scraping.

After two coats of Gripper and 2-3 coats of Satin white paint,  I was ready to drill some holes for hardware.

Have you seen this product from the Home Depot? 

It makes adding hardware easy and even. 

I love the way it turned out.

I used a flat sheet to cover the seat cushion. I had my mom sew me a giant pillow case to fit the bench seat cushion. That way I could easily remove it when it needed washed.

Ahhhhh.....so much better!
